Long awaited ban on credit cards to be taken by the UKGC

The long awaited ban on the use of credit cards, as a means to fund online gambling accounts at licensed UKGC iGaming properties, is according to the Guardian, to be unveiled as early as of Tuesday this week.

The ability to use credit cards by players and gamblers to fund their online accounts, has provoked considerable controversy over the past few years and is an area we have covered previously here on the Rightlander Compliance blog.

According to the piece in the Guardian published on Sunday, ‘well placed sources’ have informed the paper that an announcement concerning the use of credit cards is due imminently.

Currently, most UK licensed iGaming operators allow the use of credit cards to fund online gambling accounts. However, due to criticism from responsible gambling charities such as Gamble Aware, who are of the view their use can exacerbate gambling addictions, their use with online gambling sites is set to be banned.

Furthermore the Guardian reports that in addition to the ban of the use of credit cards when gambling online, all licensed iGaming operators in the UK will have to work with GamStop, as part of the conditions of their licence.
